This Could be Cosatu's Last Congress

The shadow of the Marikana massacre hangs over Cosatu as its 11th Elective Congress takes place a month after the police brutally killed more than 34 miners who worked at Lonmin mine. Ighsaan Schroeder, Director of the Casual Workers Advice Office talks about the meaning of Marikana for Cosatu and trade unions in general. This interview was recorded on September, 17, the opening day of Cosatu's 2012 congress.

Schroeder argues that Marikana signals the death rattle for Cosatu. He is not optimistic that the federation will be around in five years time, which is when another congress would take place.

He contends that the federation and its members are beset with systemic problems, and points to the changing social base of Cosatu, its tether to the ANC, as well as corruption, as the biggest systemic challenges the federation faces.

Schroeder also provides some insights into why the strikes that have spread from Lonmin to other mines in the Rustenburg region are being smashed by heavy state repression.

Labour Brokers Bad for South African Workers, but Trade Unions Not Much Better

Over the last 15 years we've seen the emergence and growth of the practice of labour broking in South Africa, which places workers, particularly those employed on the lowest rungs of the South African economy, in a very precarious position with respect to job security and a host of related quality of life indicators.

Ighsaan Schroeder of the Casual Workers Advice Office explains Why Cosatu called for a general strike against the practice of labour broking. However, he argues that the trade union federationís call for a ban on labour brokers is highly problematic for a number of reasons, not least of which is Cosatu's inability to respond to the changing nature of the South African work force.

He ventures further to say that the demise of the traditional trade union model is imminent. In Schroeder's view, it may not be too long before Cosatu itself disappears.

"I'd be surprised if Cosatu is still here in 15 years time," he contends.
