Many were unable to cast their votes
“People had registered in different provinces and townships. But they couldn’t go back there to vote and they were not aware that they could only vote where they had registered. So they could not vote” said Raymond.
He added that the parties had come during the elections campaign with promises about when they will start promised projects, create jobs, end corruption and deliver services.
“We will wait and see what they do. This election was an eye opener for the ruling party. They can no longer rule alone. This is a new political era and we will see a coalition of parties ruling the state”, Raymond added.
Siza Mlambo also believed the election was a wake up call for the ANC, which lost its majority for the first time since 1994.
“Voters showed this time that democracy is on the right track. There is no party who won an outright majority. This shows that the ruling party will need to stick to the promises it makes in its manifesto if it wants to survive. In the coalition government, I believe we will still experience the same problems from the government. The coalition parties are not likely to agree on things and the coalition will probably break up. In the future, voters will have to make sure they choose a party that sticks to their promises of service delivery”.
