Workers at Newedge Technology in Sebenza, Edenvale won a victory recently through their organising and united efforts.
The workers fought for personal protective equipment (PPE) which was finally issued.
They were also only earning the 2023 national minimum wage of R25.42 per hour. When the minimum wage increased to R27.58 per hour in 2024, the employer did not increase the wages at the company!
These workers make plasma TVs and radio equipment. All of the workers at this company - packers, truck drivers, forklift operators were paid the same. These workers actually fall under the Metal Industries Bargaining Council (MIBC) but the company failed to register them or pay them the bargaining council rates.
After the workers and CWAO organised, the employer agreed to implement the new minimum wage of R28.79 per hour, which came into effect on 1st March 2025. However, by the 3rd of March, the employer had failed to do so. CWAO organiser Jacob Potlaki said CWAO would demand that the minimum wage and the MIBC rates be enforced.
