The New Worker Edition: June 2025

09/06/2025
Publication: CWAO
Author: CWAO Editorial Collective

In this edition, we continue with our campaign against the changes to the labour laws and other stories

Dear Comrades

Welcome to another edition of the New Worker, a newsletter produced by the Casual Workers Advice Office.

As usual the bosses kept us busy with their constant exploitation of workers. In this edition you will read about the victory of the Heineken workers in the Labour Court, the fightback of Mister Sweet workers against their dismissals, the struggle of Simba workers for permanent employment, the fight for equal pay of the Heineken Sedibeng workers and many other workers’ struggle stories.

We are excited to inform you that, in this edition, we are introducing a new section called Women Workers, where women share their stories and struggles. Women are at the cutting edge of dealing with challenges of service delivery problems, unemployment, high crime and precarious forms of employment. Patriarchy and capitalism place the burden of caring for families and communities on the shoulders of women. The Women Workers page gives us insight into the challenges of women and how they are dealing and responding to them.

The struggle against the proposed labour law amendments is continuing. The edition covers the May Day event held in Johannesburg that focused on the amendments. It also outlines the next phase of this struggle. On our television screens we see the genocide of the people of Gaza. In this edition we cover the interview that Buwa Basebetsi’s Charles Leonard had with Leila Farkash, a Palestinian economist.
