The Campaign to Scrap the Labour Law Amendment Bills Protest 16 October 2025

The Campaign, made up of over 40 organisations, protested outside the Department of Employment and Labour in Parktown.

The prostest was against the minimum wage being:

  1. Very low - a poverty wage of R28.79 per hour.
  2. Hourly paid instead of monthly - and some workers only get a few hours work a week or month.
  3. Increased by only a few cents every year - further impoverishing workers; and
  4. A wage where yearly increases are decided by a tiny, elite group of NGO leaders, academics and union bureaucrats - we demand public hearings where minimum wage earners can tell the so-called National Minimum Wage Commission exactly how much money workers need in order to live.

We demand a living wage, not a poverty minimum wage!
