Simunye women workers meet to organise for a living wage and against gender-based violence and femicide

The Simunye Women Workers' Forum held a meeting on Saturday 24 January 2026

8 women comrades attended the meeting, that included the CWAO women's team. The women workers came from all over the city and surrounding areas, including Thokoza, Germiston, Primrose, Tembisa, Soweto, Vaal, Tsakane, Springs and Malvern

The women comrades first held discussions and then had a netball tournament.

The discussion centred around fighting GBV through a living wage. The comrades agreed to set up community based Whatsapp groups to intensify organising for a living wage.

Key problems raised during the discussion: companies don't pay the National Minimum Wage and the Department of Employment and Labour is failing to crack down on this.

The women also resolved to begin educating high school students about capitalism, organise a demonstration against companies who fail to pay minimum wage, and hold a market day to raise funds for the Simunye Women Workers Forum.

Apart from casual women workers attending, comrades also attended from many different communities as well as the volunteers who cook for the CHEP strike.
