I started working at Bakers NBL in 2014 as a labour broker worker.
In 2020, our labour broker, Transman, was liquidated. I am grateful to the Simunye Workers’ Forum because they helped us to get hired after that as permanent flexi employees, even though the company did not want that. We finally received bonuses, hampers and the same uniform.
Then came the biggest challenge that we faced since we got hired: we found that we were on a different pay grade to other workers who were doing the same work. The company was unfairly discriminating against us. Some colleagues were on the A2 grade yet were being paid double what we were being paid.
We scheduled several meetings with our HR to talk about this but we never got any help. We are still grateful that as Simunye members we are going for a case of unfair discrimination against Baker NBL. We are currently waiting for our arbitration date. Our goal is to see us winning our case and getting paid the same rate as other employees that we are doing the same job with.
